The School Year
The academic year in the UK begins in September and follows through to the following July. There are 195 school days and these are divided into three terms;
Autumn term – September to December with a one week, mid-term break around the middle of October. Christmas holidays are two weeks long.
Spring term – January to April with a one week mid-term break around the middle of February. The Easter holidays are two weeks long.
Summer term – April to July with a one week mid-term break around the beginning of June. The summer holidays are normally six weeks long.
Some local authorities have started to work on a six term year, but the holidays are generally at the same time. If Easter falls outside the scheduled holiday, it becomes an additional bank holiday weekend.
In addition to this, there are Public and Bank holidays, these are shown below.
All up, there are thirteen weeks of the year when schools are closed – perfect time to book those exciting European trips away!
